Very disappointed

I just want to add my voice to the many of others who are currently upset about Readercon's inability to follow their own rules and the effect it is having on people's ability to feel safe at the con. You can find the details about the situation here. Genevieve is a friend and one of the amazing people who helped us out while I lay in the hospital recovering from my heart attack. Some of the trouble even occurred as she was helping me out. I'm sickened by this whole thing.

I expected better from the Readercon board. In my experience, the overwhelming majority of people attending Readercon are good. This decision surely doesn't reflect the attitude of many of us and will cause several people to turn away, greatly diminishing us all. The actions of the board place a large dark cloud over the con. If they value the community that we've built over the years, they need to start listening and implement their policies as stated at the time.

Thanks for that reference – we’ve been avoiding cons for a variety of reasons touching on the sort of special butterfly universe that seems to be recurrent at so many of them.

Sounds like this one was a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Con. I hope you’re doing better at least.

I was in the hospital for all of the events that transpired this year, but in the past, I’ve found Readercon to be one of the most enjoyable cons and probably the one I would miss the most if I had to pass on it. It is unfortunate that the actions of one person and the ineffectiveness of the board are coloring this so darkly. The board has an opportunity to undo some of the damage and I really hope they do. There will be good and bad in any crowd, but we count on those who manage these events to manage the bad and not to drive away the good.

The overwhelming majority of people at Readercon are quite good and my editorial in next month’s issue of Clarkesworld illustrates just how good some of them have been this year.

I’m sure. After witnessing too many significant drama events at cons we attended (mostly well-handled) we just opted out with the exception of one Worldcon (Chicon).

So… how ARE you coming along?

Each day a little better. Back to the cardiologist on Wednesday to start work on a more formal recovery program for my heart. Going to be a long road.
