Clarkesworld Magazine according to Gardner Dozois

The Year’s Best Science Fiction: Twenty-Fifth Annual Collection (Year’s Best Science Fiction) by Gardner Dozois was published earlier this month and I’m quite pleased with how Clarkesworld Magazine is represented in its pages:

“Stylishly written and usually faintly perverse fantasy is also available at Clarkesworld Magazine, edited by Nick Mamatas, which this year published strong stories by Caitlin Kiernan, Elizabeth Bear, Jay Lake, Jeff VanderMeer, Ken Scholes, Jetse de Vries, Cat Rambo, and others.” –Gardner Dozois

One bone to pick there… I have two editors. Sean Wallace deserves as much of the credit as Nick. In fact, most the authors he mentions there are from his stories. Otherwise, I certainly can’t complain. Having it described as “faintly perverse fantasy” is amusing to me.

I’m absolutely thrilled by this… Over half the stories we published in 2007 have received honorable mentions. Congratulations to our authors and editors!

Orm the Beautiful by Elizabeth Bear (issue 4)
Automatic by Erica L. Satifka (issue 4)

Chewing Up the Innocent by Jay Lake (issue 5)

The Third Bear by Jeff VanderMeer (issue 7)

Qubit Conflicts by Jetse De Vries (issue 8)

The Oracle Spoke by Holly Phillips (issue 9)

I’ll Gnaw Your Bones, the Manticore Said by Cat Rambo (issue 10)

The Beacon by Darja Malcolm-Clarke (issue 11)

The Ape’s Wife by Caitlin R. Kiernan (issue 12)
Lost Soul by M P Ericson (issue 12)

A Dance Across Embers by Lisa Mantchev (issue 13)

Summer in Paris, Light from the Sky by Ken Scholes (issue 14)
Acid and Stoned Reindeer by Rebecca Ore (issue 14)

I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that all but three of these stories are also available in our print anthology, Realms: The First Year of Clarkesworld Magazine

Locus Recommended Reading List for 2007

Last year, I read the Locus Recommended Reading List for 2006 for Short Stories and was a bit disappointed by how lop-sided it appeared and by the number of markets represented.  This year’s list looks a lot better to me.  It is considerably longer (45 stories vs 57) and the number of markets with 2 or more stories on the list grew from 7 to 11.  Asimovs went from 25% of the list to 14%, which was more in line with my expectations. It’s also nice to see 4 different online magazines (Challenging Destiny, Clarkesworld, Strange Horizons and Subterranean) represented. If I have some time later, I may poke through the novella and novelette results.

Just in case you’re interested, here’s how they fell out:
8 – Asimovs
8 – F&SF
7 – Eclipse One
5 – Subterranean
4 – The New Space Opera
3 – Clarkesworld
3 – Realms of Fantasy
3 – Wizards
2 – Fast Forward 1
2 – Strange Horizons
2 – The Solaris Book of New Science Fiction
1 – 10 Others Markets

Congratulations to everyone who made the list!  A special congrats go to Barth Anderson, Elizabeth Bear, and Jeff VanderMeer for their Clarkesworld stories that made the list.

Clarkesworld Poll: Best 2007 Story Top Ten Final Results

The Clarkesworld Readers’ Poll for Best 2007 Story closed last night. This morning I ran a program to delete any last minute ballot stuffing attempts and then started work on analyzing the data. I looked at the data a few ways to see if I could detect any problems.

Early on, some people suggested to me that we might have a problem with vote recruiting. The most obvious place to look for this would with the voters who only selected one story instead of the three they were allowed. Breaking the data apart was easy. All votes are tracked by IP address and in a few minutes I had the final results cast by singletons and multiples. Interestingly enough, the results changed in very minor ways. Nine of the top ten remained in the top ten and there was only a little movement among them. I know that there had been several attempts at ballot stuffing, but vote recruiting seems to have been insignificant, even when making the false assumption that all singletons were dishonest.

Comfortable with the final data, I can now announce the top ten Clarkesworld stories from 2007:

10 – The Taste of Wheat by Ekaterina Sedia (August)
9 – The Third Bear by Jeff VanderMeer (April)
8 – Threads of Red and White by Lisa Mantchev (December)
7 – A Dance Across Embers by Lisa Mantchev (October)
6 – Something in the Mermaid Way by Carrie Laben (March)
5 – I’ll Gnaw Your Bones, the Manticore Said by Cat Rambo (July)
4 – Excerpt From A Letter By A Social-realist Aswang by Kristin Mandigma (October)
3 – Summer in Paris, Light from the Sky by Ken Scholes (November)
2 – Orm the Beautiful by Elizabeth Bear (January)

And the #1 story is……

The Ape’s Wife by Caitlin Kiernan (September)

Thanks for voting and congratulations to our winners!

October Issue of Clarkesworld Magazine

The first issue of our second year is now available… or at least the part you’ve come to expect is. Later this month, we’ll be adding some non-fiction to our lineup. I had planned to make everything available tonight, but this past week tossed a few obstacles at me. The non-fiction side of Clarkesworld will allow for reader response, much like a blog. The way I see it, there isn’t much point in doing an online magazine with non-fiction unless people can respond to it. So, give me a couple of weeks and you’ll see the first of a few changes in place.

For now you can run off and enjoy…
