It took almost 5 hours of driving, but I managed to get back in from Boskone just before dinner today. I’m glad I managed to get in before the kids went to sleep. Now I have hundreds of emails to read (after deleting spam), lots of things to pass along about the con, and hours of sleep to catch up on. I think sleep wins.

The annual Clarkesworld Magazine anthology will be called Realms. If we’re lucky, perhaps we’ll have Realms 1 ready for World Fantasy.
It’s been a busy morning. Since announcing that the store would be closing, I’ve received a steady stream of emails from customers, authors, publishers, and booksellers all lamenting the store’s passing and wishing us the best with the baby. It’s been an emotionally draining week and I’m simply overwhelmed by all the kind words. Thanks one and all.
Now that all this is happening, I’m kicking myself for not getting a table in the Dealer’s room at Boskone this week. It would have been a good opportunity to sell off some inventory without having to do all the packing. I was thinking though, I don’t need a table to get rid of some books. If you’ll be there, just place an order before Thursday and I can bring them with me. I don’t have to pack and you won’t have to pay shipping. Something for everyone!
So, if you’ll be there and want books, buy now. If you’ll be there and just want to say Hi, I’ll be there.
I started Clarkesworld Books seven years ago and each year, it has outperformed the prior year. I’m the only employee, but the store uses my home as its storage space, so in effect my wife and kids are honorary staff. I couldn’t ask for a more supportive team.
A few weeks ago, we found out that we’re expecting our third child. Life takes these little unexpected turns every now and then. This particular one requires living space and that space is currently occupied by a bookstore that has nowhere else to go. After much consideration, I’m sad to say that I’m going to be closing the store. I’ve considered all the options and this is the one that makes the most sense for my soon to be expanding family. If you know how much this business has meant to me, you know this wasn’t an easy decision.
I owe a lot to everyone that has supported us over the years. I feel a bit like I’m letting people down, but this is something I have to do. Family comes first. Clarkesworld is not big enough to take on the staff we’d need to continue (babies need time), and I certainly can’t afford the cost of rent here in NJ. My wife will also need my help to keep her (more profitable) business going.
Everyone who has a preorder in with us will receive their books, but I’ll probably stop taking more preorders in the next week or so. The website will continue to be maintained and I will take orders for in-stock books for as long as it takes to sell them all off. There will be many bargains to be had.
Some of you are probably wondering what this will do to Clarkesworld Magazine. None of the reasons for closing the store apply to the magazine. I have every intention of keeping the magazine going and quite probably taking advantage of a few other related opportunities that are presenting themselves.
Running the store has been a personally rewarding experience. I’ve met many new friends over the years and never ceased to be amazed by how good some people were to us. Thanks to all of you from all of us.
I was going to ask people for help weeks ago, but then Night Shade Books beat me to the punch. It seems we both have annual anthologies that we’d like to come up with names for. In my case, it’s the annual Clarkesworld Magazine Anthology. I’ve been banging my head against a wall trying to come up with something good and have gotten nowhere. The one thing we know is that Clarkesworld will not be in the title, but it could be in a subtitle.
So, anyone feeling creative today?
Update: Just so we’re clear, we’re not dropping the Clarkesworld name from the title because of possible associations with Arthur C. Clarke. We want a title that will be more marketable.
