HWA Annual Conference and the Stokers

It looks like I’ll be at the Stokers on Friday and Saturday. We already had plans for Sunday (Father’s Day) so I won’t be around then. Who else will be there? Anyone have a schedule yet?

5Red Scream

Brian Keene managed to lose the top spot to himself this week. The Rutting Season hardcover was sold out months ago and we shipped all paid preorders last week, so he has a chance to take the spot back from himself next week.

Started reading Paragaea this weekend. So far, I’m enjoying it. It was momentarily interupted by Tim Powers forthcoming novel, Three Days to Never. I was luck enough to get my hands on an advance copy. Excellent stuff. Not his best, but definitely near the top.

Countdown to Readercon

Readercon is just under a month away and I since I was unable to get a table in the dealer’s room, I’ve decided to make good use of the extra freedom that gives me. I’ve started contacting authors that willing attending the con to set up as many signings as possible. I’m packing my car with as many books as it will hold. 🙂

So far, I’ve had acceptances from: Allen Steele, James Morrow, Jeffrey Carver, Jeffrey Ford, Karl Schoeder, Paul Di Filippo, Paul Levinson, Paul Witcover, Peter Watts, Richard Bowes, and Robert J. Sawyer. Many personal favorites, so I’m very pleased.

No one has said no, but there are a few that just haven’t written back yet. There are still more that I don’t have email addresses for and would love to add to that list. Some of you are on my friends list, so if you haven’t heard from me, please drop me a line at books@clarkesworld.com or post a comment. Likewise if you have contact information for someone who isn’t mentioned above and would be willing to put me in touch with them. I’ve noticed a distinct lack of female authors on the confirmed list, so there will be some extra effort made there. Normally it’s much more balanced.

Another good magazine day

I received a bunch of magazines over the last two days.

Apex #6, On Spec #61, On Spec #62, On Spec #63, On Spec #64, and The Dark Man 9&10 (a REH Journal) were new issues of magazines we already stocked. We had been having trouble with the deliveries of On Spec, but it looks like everything is fixed.

Two great magazines hit issue #10. We received Electric Velocipede #10 and Zahir #10. Congratulations to John and Sheryl on reaching the double-digits!

The Chronicler of the Cross Plains is completely new to our store and we’ve received issue #2. This one should be of interest to Robert E. Howard fans and it comes from the people who publish Two Gun Raconteur.

The last box unpacked was a bunch of Weird Tales facsimile reprint editions of issues 290-295. There’s some good stuff in here, including special issues for Avram Davidson, Karl Edward Wagner, Brian Lumley, Gene Wolfe and Tanith Lee. We should see a new issue of Weird Tales shortly. I’ve been told they are shipping, so maybe sometime next week.

The best magazine news of the day came from Steve Pasechnick, the editor of Alchemy Magazine. Only two issues of this magazine were produced and they were excellent. After a long hiatus, Alchemy #3 has just started shipping. I’m hoping to have details and copies soon.

ps. You can thank my 6 year old son for that LJ icon up there.

5Realms of Fantasy

We just started selling Realms of Fantasy last week and it’s already making a showing in the bestseller list. There are only a few of the newstand genre magazines I don’t have yet, and that’s largely due to their publishers or my ignorance. DNA, for example, publishes Fantastic Stories of the Imagination. The handful of issues I have are from their editor since DNA won’t sell to bookstores. That policy also force me to go alternate route on Weird Tales and Mythic Delirium too. Those two are easy now thanks to the people that edit them.

Anyhow, I’m bound to have missed a good magazine (large or small). Anyone know one that I should be selling? Here’s the page to the magazine listings:
